Assam Hockey was found in the year 2009 as a unified body of the state. It has affiliations from Hockey India & Assam Olympic Association and has been recognized by Deptt of Sports, Govt of Assam. Assam has the distinction of having a glorious past in context to Hockey. Assam Hockey has organized five national championships in various categories from the year 2013 to 2018 thereby providing great amount of exposure to local talent & thus has been able to popularize hockey to the extent that at present it has 26 affiliated district units playing under its banner.
In the past Greater Assam was the first state in the north east region to have a full fledge Hockey Team while other neighboring states, which were not recognized till that time, happened to be a part of Assam Hockey as district unit members.
Assam has the privilege of having the likes of great Major Dhyan Chand visiting twice to coach & guide Assam Hockey Team at Nagaon, Assam in the year 1965 & 1967. With such proud history, Assam Hockey is surging ahead and has carved a name for itself on the national scene, especially in women’s hockey. To prove it further, Assam women have won Sr Women Hockey National Championship – ‘B” division in 2014 and Sub Junior national championship – women in the year 2018. Not to be left behind Assam Boys also won the Sub Junior National Championship-‘B’ -division 2018.
Assam has a dedicated Astro Turf hockey stadium in Bhetapara, Guwahati. It was proud host to SAG games in the year 2016 and thus providing an international exposure to Assam Hockey. 3rdKhelo India Youth Games were also held successfully at this stadium in the year 2020.
Two more Astro Turf grounds are coming up at Kokrajhar&Sonapur. These shall be operational soon. One more hockey ground has been proposed at Amoni, Nagaon.
With all this and growing local support & positive back up from the state govt, Hockey India & AOA, there is no stopping Assam Hockey to attain greater heights.
